01 · The problem

ESG requests arrive faster than data can be organised.

SMEs receive ESG questionnaires from banks, customers, investors and procurement teams, but often don't know which data is needed or how to structure it. The result: lost tenders, slowed financing and improvised reporting that doesn't scale.

  • Bank financing tied to ESG questionnaires
  • Customer and tender requests with tight deadlines
  • Supply-chain disclosures across different standards
  • Internal data scattered across HR, finance and operations

From obligation to strategic compliance

Reporting and being scored are not the same thing

After the Omnibus package narrowed the mandatory scope, Italy's national body of chartered accountants reframed SME reporting as a shift «from obligation to strategic compliance»: what drives real demand is no longer the law, but banks, clients and tenders. That changes what a good output looks like.

«The automatic filling of questionnaires produced documents that were formally polished but inconsistent in content […] derived from an uncritical use of pre-filled models, often designed for rating purposes rather than reporting.»
CNDCEC, sustainability reporting paper no. 19, November 2025, after examining over forty Italian VSME reports.

Indicators you can trace, one by one

Declared source for every figure

Everything looks complete

Missing data is named as missing

A PDF that ends the job

A dossier that gets reused at the next request

There is one question that tells the two apart: «where does this number come from?» If the answer is «from the system», the report will not survive a bank review. In VSME-PRO every indicator carries its source, its period and the evidence behind it, and what is missing is shown as missing.

The CNDCEC has not assessed, approved or recommended VSME-PRO: the quoted criticism concerns a widespread practice, not individual providers.

Bark & Beyond

Access the VSME-PRO software modules by supporting the Bark & Beyond program

A single access to the main VSME-PRO software tools through one of the ways to support Bark & Beyond, the ESG program dedicated to animal welfare aligned with ESRS S3 and G1.

Strays are not only an animal-welfare matter: free-roaming packs affect road safety and public health. Geolocated reports and tracked interventions are the basis for measuring these effects on communities (ESRS S3).

* ESG-project feasibility is assessed case by case based on the company's industry. ** Tax deductibility of donations will be available once the non-profit entity is incorporated; until then the contribution is structured as an ESG sponsorship. Software plans included: Knowledge Hub, Starter, AI-assisted; the Advisory plan remains a separate fee.

The two VSME modules

Do you need Basic or Comprehensive?

The standard has two modules. Most SMEs only need the first one, and knowing that saves you from buying more than you need.

Basic module (B1–B11)Comprehensive module (C1–C9)
Who needs itAlmost every SME. It is the module banks, corporate customers and tenders ask for.Companies facing more demanding requests: large corporate clients, investors, structured supply chains.
What it coversB1–B11: company profile, existing practices, energy and GHG emissions, pollution, biodiversity, water, waste, workforce, health and safety, contracts and training, anti-corruption.C1–C9: sustainability strategy, policies and initiatives, GHG reduction targets, climate risks, workforce diversity, human rights, incidents, revenues from excluded sectors, governance diversity.
When it is enoughWhen the request is 'send us your ESG data'. In most cases, this is all you need. When they ask about strategy, targets and climate risk, not just current figures.
Included inStarter, from €399/yearAI-assisted, from €1,490/year. With Starter you see the mapping, not the compilation.

Not sure which one applies to you? The dossier starts from Basic and the Comprehensive sections stay available when you need them.
