Leaving a reporting obligation does not necessarily remove ESG information requests. The opposite claim is also wrong: not every SME needs a report to remain competitive.
Start with actual requests, not fear of falling behind.
Separate the frameworks
Omnibus changes the mandatory CSRD framework. VSME was designed as a voluntary instrument. The VS adopted on 3 July 2026 and its legal status are explained in the updated timeline.
The value chain cap concerns specified reporting purposes. It is not a universal ban on ESG questions: verify the purpose, protected undertaking, applicable text and national implementation before refusing a request. European Commission source.
Five reasons to organise data
- Customers and procurement: supplier qualification.
- Banks: evidence for credit-related information requests.
- Tenders and grants: supporting documents, without replacing specific requirements.
- Investors: understandable information on risks, practices and indicators.
- Management and reputation: public statements supported by verifiable facts.
An adviser can support proactive preparation without presenting that service as a mandatory compliance exercise.
Decide how much to invest
List requests received during the past twelve months and plausible requests for the next cycle. Record the relationship at stake, deadline, information required and collection cost. Where there is no concrete need, an initial inventory may be proportionate without immediately starting a larger project.
The right decision may be Basic, a broader programme or a targeted response. Do not call a targeted response a complete VSME report unless it meets the relevant requirements.
Measure the benefit
Track collection time, unsourced figures, repeated questions and requests for clarification. Observe savings rather than promising them. A report alone does not guarantee a contract, funding or economic return.
