VSME, Cat Nat insurance and banks: why physical risk enters the conversation

Climate risks, catastrophe insurance and bank requests are separate questions: connect them through site data and appropriate specialist review.

Catastrophe insurance, climate-risk assessment and an ESG response to a bank may use some common information. They are not equivalent documents.

Risk is not the same as coverage

A policy describes insured risks, assets, terms and limits. It does not prove that a company has no exposure or that every operational consequence is covered.

For Italian obligations and specific cases, consult the MIMIT catastrophe-insurance FAQs and applicable rules. Assets used and existing cover matter; this article does not determine an individual business's insurance position.

Catastrophic does not always mean climatic

An earthquake is not a climate phenomenon. Flooding and other events still require specific assessment of hazard, exposure and vulnerability.

C4 in VSME 2025 concerns climate risks. Site information can help, but a map or insurance policy does not complete the assessment. VSME reference.

A practical site file

Our organisational suggestion is to collect:

  • location and activities;
  • assets and processes important to continuity;
  • available assessments and maps, dated and sourced;
  • relevant policies and coverage limits;
  • prevention and response procedures;
  • the person responsible for review.

Separate established facts, specialist assessments and open questions. A source indicating exposure does not automatically establish an economic-loss estimate.

What to tell the bank

Answer the actual question. Insurance, physical exposure and business continuity may require different evidence. Seek clarification if the questionnaire combines them.

The accountant can coordinate collection; technical and insurance assessments need appropriate expertise. A VSME report replaces neither the policy nor specialist advice.
