Supporting an SME with VSME takes more than knowing a form or generating a PDF. It requires understanding which information describes the business and the limits of the engagement.
Define the service
Data collection, report preparation, analysis and assurance are not interchangeable labels. A preparation engagement does not justify describing the result as certified or assured.
Before accepting work, check the skills, responsibilities and professional requirements applicable to the specific engagement. VSME's voluntary character does not establish that every related activity is unrestricted.
CNDCEC IRS 20 provides professional context. This guide does not replace an engagement-specific assessment.
Operational skills to maintain
Read the standard. Distinguish versions, modules, conditions and optional disclosures.
Manage information. Understand scope, period, units and reconciliation. Recognise when a source does not support an answer.
Know the limits of your expertise. Obtain specialist input when emissions, physical risks or other assessments require it.
Communicate precisely. Separate measurements, estimates, targets and future actions. Do not describe a proposal as an achieved result.
Protect information. Agree access, retention and sharing; use synthetic data when testing tools.
Choosing training and tools
A course should help solve checkable cases rather than merely provide a certificate. Software should make the data journey understandable and reviewable, not just display a score.
A useful exercise is to reconstruct an indicator from a synthetic source, document a gap and explain the answer to someone else. If that process is unclear, develop the capability before promising delivery.
Begin with a bounded engagement
Agree a realistic initial scope, expose problems and review before submission. Avoid promises of identical delivery times or unsupported standard fees.
Continue with repeatable engagement work and Basic/Comprehensive selection.
